Sportsmanship on the Poker Table

August 7th, 2008 | by the MDB |

I have just been musing about poker and morality and sportsmanship.

It came about after I was in a sit n’ go tourney and it was down to just two of us at the end. The door went and so I had to leave the table for a bit and told the other guy this, at this stage I was had about 4000 chips while the other guy had 2000. Of course when I came back I was down to about 1000. The other guy went on to win. I wasn’t bothered, it’s life, but from my point of view I would always want to win properly, not like that.

I grew up playing a lot of sport and for me sportsmanship and winning the right way is always the most important thing. Living close to the line and bending the rules is one thing. However, you can’t lie to yourself about how you won. A win is pretty hollow if you know deep down that you didn’t deserve it.

What do you think? Do you take the win however it comes? Do you think sportsmanship has a place on the poker table? Do you find it exists?

Best of Luck & Thank you,

That’s a tough one in my book.
In an ideal world, everyone would be sporting, and the games would be fair - but I know if I got dis-connected, that my chips would go pretty quickly - so playing fair yourself would only ever be a losing proposition - so in most games I’ll do the same now.

However, if I’m playing a game against someone either I know (a social league game online- for example), or have been chatting with and it’s been a “friendly” game, I’ll try and use my time bank to give them time to get back in.

Nice blog btw - I’ll link you up.
